Study shows bid for salt restrictions had no impact

“The voluntary approach has failed,” said study author Dr Stephen Havas, an expert in preventive medicine.

His study reviewed sodium content in 402 processed foods, finding the additive declined by only 3.5% over the six years to 2011.

At the same time, sodium content in 78 fast food restaurant products increased by 2.6%.

Some individual products decreased sodium by up to 30% but this was counteracted by increases of 30% or more in other products.
