Study shows less preterm infections with pre/probiotics

Among 94 infants born between 32 and 36 weeks gestation in Finland, those receiving prebiotics mixed with breast milk or formula in the first two months of life had a 76% reduced incidence of RTI compared to those receiving a placebo.

And the group receiving probiotics had half the incidence of RTI.

Early manipulation of infant gut microbiota may be a cost-effective way of avoiding viral infection in these vulnerable babies, the researchers said.
