Suicide deaths at a 10-year high

DEATH by suicide is at a 10-year high and remains the leading cause of mortality in people aged 15–34, according to the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS).

It is also the leading cause of premature mortality across all age groups, with a rate of 12 deaths per 100,000 people in 2014.

Men accounted for more than three-quarters of this group.

The median age at death by suicide for males was 44.4 years (compared with 78.5 years for all-cause mortality), and 43.6 years for females (compared with 84.8).

This translates to almost 100,000 years of potential life lost in 2014.
