Suicide risk after bariatric surgery overlooked

Treatment-emergent suicidal ideation and behaviour should be assessed after bariatric surgery just like any drug treatment, an Australian professor has argued.

Professor John Dixon, head of clinical obesity research at the Baker IDI Heart and Diabetes Institute, says it’s unacceptable for doctors to blame patients’ premorbid psychological state or psychological maladaptation after surgery for the reported high rates of self-harm and suicidal ideation.
