Superbug looming for strep B?

In a letter to the New England Journal of Medicine, physicians from two separate US centres report cases of invasive group B streptococcal infection with resistance to vancomycin, the antibiotic usually reserved for cases where standard therapy with penicillin has failed or cannot be used due to allergy.

The cases involved two patients who were infected with strains of streptococcus B that had developed genetic protection against vancomycin and resistance to other antibiotics.
