Surgery success lower among insulin users

The study in 690 patients who underwent Roux-en-Y gastric bypass surgery showed those who used insulin before surgery were six times less likely to achieve diabetes remission.

Age, HbA1c, insulin and other diabetes drugs predicted the probability of remission and were included in the remission score (DiaRem).

The authors cited an example of an individual with a BMI of 39kg/m2 and a DiaRem score of 22, who could benefit from surgery in terms of weight loss but would have a low probability of diabetes remission.
