Surgery trumps medication for glycaemic control

Most obese patients treated by bariatric surgery are likely to maintain an HbA1c level of less than 7% five years after their operation, UK researchers have found.  

This is based on a study in which 60 patients were randomised to gastric bypass, biliopancreatic diversion or conventional medical treatment.  

The researchers say their study supports efforts to include surgery in a treatment
