Swallowed tongue studs cause bowel perforation

Surgeons are warning of the dangers of magnetic tongue studs after repairing a perforated bowel in a man who accidentally swallowed them.

The 36-year-old presented to hospital with sudden-onset abdominal pain and fever, and was found to have a hole in his bowel wall caused by six magnetic beads.

Surgeons performed a bowel resection and the man recovered well.
