Swiss support network for distressed doctors
A program to help doctors dealing with burn-out or depression is being rolled out nationally across Switzerland.
After a successful three-year pilot phase in two regions in Switzerland, the support network ReMed (Rete Medicorum) will be available nationally to doctors struggling with burn-out, emotional exhaustion, depression and other forms of stress.
Doctors who contacted ReMed primarily experienced burn-out and depression (43%), followed by practice and everyday life problems (32%), addiction (13%), feelings of guilt following a professional error, inability to work following an accident, post-traumatic stress and legal proceedings (12%).
Surprisingly, a quarter of the doctors who used the program were 45 years or younger, with many reporting they had been numbed by the pressures of daily work-life and its hierarchical structures.
