Tantrums signal psychopathology

Both the frequency and severity can provide clues, say US researchers who administered a diagnostic questionnaire to 1500 parents of three- to five-year-olds.

While just under 84% of the children occasionally lost their temper, less than 9% threw a tantrum daily – across all racial and ethnic groups, socioeconomic backgrounds, and in both boys and girls.

While daily temper loss was not the norm at any age, some behaviours were also more worrying than others. For example, tantrums lasting more than five minutes, displaying aggression such
