Target high-risk Patients to prevent diabetes

Researchers from the Baker IDI Heart and Diabetes Institute said intensive lifestyle interventions in people with impaired glucose tolerance or impaired fasting glucose would be the single most effective strategy to reduce the number of diabetes cases by 2025.

In contrast, a population-wide junk food tax would reduce cases by 60,000 to 85,000 and surgery-induced weight loss would reduce cases by only 3000 to 6000 over the same time period.

No single intervention, or combination of strategies, would reverse the upward trend in diabetes prevalence over the next 15 years, the researchers said.
