A third of knee replacements ‘inappropriate’

US experts are calling for new ways to identify patients suitable for knee replacement after they found a third of the procedures carried out are “inappropriate”.

Their study of 175 knee replacement patients showed only 44% of surgeries were appropriate according to a modified version of the most extensively used criteria, developed by Spanish researcher Antonio Escobar and colleagues.

A further 22% were deemed inconclusive and 34% were inappropriate, found the authors led by Dr Daniel Riddle of the Virginia Commonwealth
