The randomised, double-blind study of 160 women found that those given cranberry extract capsules were significantly less likely to develop the infection compared to those taking a placebo (19% vs 38%).

“This reduction in UTI risk is similar in magnitude to that reportedly obtained by administering antibiotics at time of catheter removal and avoids the collateral damage associated with antibiotic use, including pressure for antibiotic resistance,” the US researchers wrote.
