Thyroid cancer epidemic not real: study

A dramatic threefold rise in thyroid cancer is the result of overdetection rather than a surge in the disease, Australian findings show.

Researchers say their study of autopsy data reveals the incidental differentiated thyroid cancer rate (iDTC) has remained unchanged since the 1970s, confirming for the first time that a widely reported “epidemic” has been driven by increased detection of small tumours.
