Tobacco price hike link to high quit rates

The first Australian study to examine changes in the profiles of individuals calling a Quitline found those nominating ‘money’ as a motivator increased markedly in 2010 after a nationwide 25% tax increase on cigarettes.

Researchers examined data on more than 43,000 new callers to the NSW Quitline between January 2008 and October 2011, a period of change in tobacco control policy with significant price increases, expansion of smoke-free public spaces and changes in packaging and point-of-sale regulations.
