Treatment access vital after screen

With no national screening program for retinopathy, health professionals in Cork tried screening in the community.

Over six months 1763 people from 30 practices were screened and 1542 were evaluated. More than 85% of these patients had type 2 diabetes.

The patients were screened in 15 optometry clinics equipped with approved retinal cameras. GPs were provided with the results and could refer the patient within two weeks if necessary.
