Triclosan promotes Staphylococcus aureus colonisation

US researchers demonstrated that S. aureus grown in the presence of triclosan is better able to attach to human proteins.

In nasal swabs of 90 healthy adults, they found triclosan in 37 (40%) and noted those with triclosan were more likely to also have S. aureus.

“Our data demonstrate the unintended consequences of unregulated triclosan use,” the authors said, adding the benefits should be re-evaluated in consumer products.
