Troponin test in primary care problematic

Long turnaround times for results, uncertainty about the accuracy of point-of-care tests and uncertainty about the value of a single troponin test over serial testing has led some experts to say troponin testing is unrealistic in most general practice settings.

But writing in the MJA, chemical pathologist Dr George Marshall from Mater Hospital in Brisbane and colleagues say troponin testing can have a place in general practice in certain circumstances.

They recommend a single troponin test to exclude the possibility of acute MI in asymptomatic patients
