True rise in coeliac disease needs investigation: study

A retrospective cohort study of diagnoses in south-east Scotland, drawing on case notes, pathology, endoscopy and other patient records, found coeliac incidence rose from 1.8 to 11.7 per 100,000 children between 1990 and 2009.

About half the rise was attributed to presentations meeting the strict ‘Oslo’ criteria for coeliac disease, the authors said.
