Type 1 diabetes with coeliac disease may increase risk of retinopathy

Swedish researchers analysed a register of 41,500 adults with type 1 diabetes, of whom 947 also had biopsy-proven coeliac disease.

Among this cohort, they found that those who had coeliac disease for less than 10 years were not more likely to develop diabetic retinopathy but those who had the disease for longer than a decade were nearly twice as likely to develop it.

One possible mechanism is the persistent low-grade inflammation, which is likely to occur in the intestine of patients with coeliac disease, the researchers said.
