Type 2 diabetes risk with progestin implants

After six months, women using progestin-releasing contraceptives that had been implanted under the skin experienced a 10% increase in fasting blood glucose levels. Women using a progestin-releasing IUD had a 5% increase, while those using non-hormonal contraceptives had a 2% decrease. The effects on insulin sensitivity showed a similar trend, while β-cell function and insulin resistance did not change significantly. There were no changes in blood pressure, weight or cholesterol.
