Ultrasound helpful in guiding biologic therapy

Ultrasound evaluation may help rheumatologists decide when to taper and discontinue biologics in patients with rheumatoid arthritis in remission without risking disease relapse, Italian researchers say.

Their study of 42 patients with RA on anti-TNF-alpha treatment found 69.1% maintained disease remission after three months when they underwent ultrasound evaluation of synovial hypertrophy (SH) and power Doppler (PD) signal presence.
