Underarm epidermal splitting
These are a hallmark of Hailey-Hailey disease. With excess sweating and low grade candida or staphylococcus infection, the keratinocytes separate from each other and these splits appear in the epidermis. It commonly affects the axillae, groin and sub mammary areas and is worse in hot, humid weather. It is improved with antibiotics, antifungal creams plus topical steroids. The only other skin conditions that can give a similar appearance are Darier’s disease and pemphigus vegetans.
