United front needed to combat anorexia

Using FBT, up to 80% of adolescent cases are weight-restored within 12 months and up to 90% remain that way after five years, according to specialists from the Redleaf Practice, Sydney, and the Eating Disorder Service at the Children’s Hospital, Westmead.

Anorexia nervosa has an average duration of seven years and a mortality rate of up to 20%, the authors wrote in a commentary in the Australian and New Zealand Journal of Psychiatry.

They said hospital readmissions were reduced by up to 50% with FBT, which is focused initially on utilising parental
