US researchers found that since the introduction of the vaccines in 2006, rotavirus-related gastroenteritis dropped 80% among young children and was about halved in adults aged up to 44 years.

Cause-unspecified gastroenteritis has also dropped, suggesting the immunisation program has conferred herd immunity, the researchers said.
Their study is the first nationally representative view of the impact of the vaccines, with most previous research confined to single hospitals.
