Unrequested gonorrhoea testing

The head of the sexual health research program at the Kirby Institute, Professor Basil Donovan, said gonorrhoea annual notifications had risen substantially, with rates almost doubling among men and women in the five years 2007–12.

But around the same time, a number of laboratories began routinely performing tests for both chlamydia and gonorrhoea on the one sample, even when GPs only requested a test for chlamydia.

Professor Donovan said it was likely that many GPs would be unaware that the extra pathology was being carried out because a negative result for a test that isn
