Uptake of CHADS2 to guide use of warfarin

Some guidelines recommend using the CHADS2 score, so Canadian researchers have assessed if GPs use it. They searched the records of three practices for patients with atrial fibrillation.

There were 415 patients who were taking warfarin to prevent stroke. The researchers calculated the CHADS2 scores and divided the patients into groups according to their risk.

Nearly 30% of the patients did not have a clear indication for warfarin. This included some patients (7%) who had no indication for anticoagulation.
