Urologist celebrates brachytherapy effectiveness

Brachytherapy is an effective treatment for prostate cancer in men not suitable for surgery, says a Queensland urologist who has conducted a nine-year follow-up on more than 750 of his patients.

Dr John Yaxley (pictured) from Wesley Hospital found overall survival rate of 92% among more than 500 patients who received high-dose-rate (HDR) therapy, with median follow-up of 9.2 years.

Two-thirds of the group were deemed high-risk and almost 40% had a Gleason score of eight or more.
