US expands testing for contaminated meat

The US meat industry will have to test beef trimmings for six new strains of E. coli that have been linked to a growing number of illnesses, the agriculture department announced.

Until now, the industry has been required to test for just one strain of the pathogen.

It was identified following an outbreak in fast-food restaurants which killed four children.

Illnesses from that strain have decreased over the years but more people have been infected by other E. coli strains found in foods such as
