US prisoners getting older and sicker

From 2000–09, the US prison population grew by 16%, however the number of prisoners aged 55 years or older increased by nearly 80%.

Older prisoners cost two to three times as much as younger inmates due to higher rates of disability and chronic disease.

The report recommends screening older prisoners for dementia and improving the training of prison staff.
