US rejects new international diagnostic criteria for gestational diabetes

A US National Institutes of Health (NIH) expert panel met this week to discuss the criteria, releasing a statement yesterday stating there was not enough evidence to adopt the single-step fasting glucose test proposed by the International Association of Diabetes and Pregnancy Study Groups (IADPSG).

Dr Aidan McElduff, president of the Australian Diabetes in Pregnancy Society (ADIPS), said today had the NIH consensus group endorsed the international guidelines, it would have made the decision on what diagnostic criteria to use in Australia easy.
