Vaccine supporters ‘suppressed’ by anti-vax group
The Northern Rivers Vaccination Supporters (NRVS) group set out their concerns in a submission to the NSW parliamentary inquiry into the promotion of false or misleading health-related information or practices.
The group says the northern NSW region is at risk of epidemics of contagious disease because it has Australia’s highest rates of conscientious objectors to vaccines – 7.8% in Richmond-Tweed and 7.2% in Lismore – with very high rates of non-vaccinated children (9.9% and 8.9%, respectively).
“These rates put the rest of our community at risk by putting us below the threshold required to achieve herd immunity,” its submission said.
The NRVS said it’s “no coincidence” that their region is the headquarters of the Australian Vaccination-skeptics Network (AVN), accusing the lobby group of attacking and ridiculing others who oppose its views.
