Vaccine switch blamed for pertussis epidemic

Examination of reported pertussis cases in Queensland before and after the switch from whole cell pertussis vaccine to the newer acellular vaccine suggests children receiving the latter were more likely to contract the infection – leaving aside unvaccinated children.

The study suggested there was a “benefit-risk trade-off” involved in the switch, said the study authors from the Queensland Children’s Medical Research Institute.
