Very low-carb, high-fat diet has downsides in type 1 diabetes

A KETOGENIC diet can achieve impressively low HbA1c levels in adults with type 1 diabetes but it comes at a potential cost of hypoglycaemia and dyslipidaemia, Australian researchers say.

In a small, observational study they provide the first evidence that a diet with very low carbohydrate intake (less than 55g carbs a day) and high fat was associated with “excellent HbA1c levels” and low glycaemic variability.
