Viagra may help in hypoxia-ischaemia

An injection of sildenafil could improve outcomes for newborns suffering hypoxic-ischaemic brain injury, say French researchers.

In their study the researchers from the French Institute of Health and Medical Research induced hypoxia-ischaemia in rat pups and simultaneously injected them with either a placebo or with sildenafil, which inhibits nitric oxide degradation.

After seven days, the rats injected with sildenafil had recovered motor coordination and had a significantly lower level of tissue loss compared to the placebo group
