A case-cohort study of 1739 total and 489 high-grade prostate cancer cases from the Selenium and Vitamin E Cancer Prevention Trial (SELECT) revealed that when baseline toenail selenium (Se) concentrations were high, supplementation with high-dose Se (200 μg/d) increased the risk of high-grade prostate cancer among older men by 91%.

High-dose vitamin E (400 IU/d) more than doubled the high-grade prostate cancer risk but only among men with low baseline toenail Se concentrations.
