VTE risk confirmed in Sjogren’s syndrome

Patients with Sjogren’s syndrome (SS) have a two-fold increased risk of developing venous thromboembolism (VTE) compared with the general population, according to a US systematic review of four studies.

The researchers from the Mayo Clinic say chronic inflammation may be to blame, as it has been linked to the stimulation of the coagulation cascade, inhibiting anticoagulation pathways and impairing the fibrinolytic process.
