Drawing on a national insurance database in Taiwan, researchers compared 30,000 people with RA to 117,000 healthy individuals matched for age and gender.
After accounting for a range of factors including high blood pressure, cholesterol, diabetes and heart failure, they found patients with RA had a threefold increased risk of DVT and double the risk of PE. Patients with RA younger than 50 had even higher risk, they found.
