Walnuts top snack for heart health

WALNUTS are the best nut to eat for a healthy heart – and only seven a day are required to receive health benefits, research suggests.

The study was the first to analyse the amount and quality of antioxidants in nine types of nut – walnuts, almonds, peanuts, pistachios, hazelnuts, Brazil nuts, cashews, macadamias and pecans.

Walnuts had the highest level of antioxidants, being two to 15 times more potent than vitamin E.

“A handful of walnuts contains almost twice as much antioxidants as an equivalent amount of any other commonly consumed nut,” an American Chemical Society conference was told.
