Warning rickettsial diseases prevalent

Dr John Stenos (PhD), the senior scientist and director of the Australian Rickettsial Reference Laboratory, said the facility sees at least 2000 cases per year but the number of reports underestimates the true prevalence.

“A lot of these diseases present with quite mild symptoms so people don’t go to the doctor and seek medical attention,” Dr Stenos said.

“They usually pass it off as a cold and flu and... in most cases it resolves over time.”
