Watch and wait just as good as antibiotics in first case of diverticulitis

A WATCH and wait approach is as good as antibiotics in treating an uncomplicated first case of diverticulitis, researchers say.

In the Dutch study of 528 patients, being randomised to antibiotics or observation made little difference to recovery time, say the researchers from the University of Amsterdam and other institutions.

The mean time to recovery in the observation group was 14 days and in the antibiotic group 12 days, with more than six months of follow-up.

No significant differences were found for other outcomes
