Weight and disease paradox

A paradox is defined as a seemingly contradictory statement that may nonetheless be true. There are many paradoxes in health, particularly where causality is unclear and treatment is often ineffectual.

It’s no surprise that the field of obesity is resplendent with paradoxes. It seems the more we learn about the problem, the less certain we become about the causes.

Take, for example, a recent presentation at the American Academy of Sciences meeting in Boston suggesting ‘a calorie is not a calorie’.
