Weight Watchers beats DIY diets

A US randomised controlled trial, presented this week at the European Congress of Obesity in Liverpool, compared weight loss among almost 300 people following the Weight Watchers diet and a self-help approach.

After three and six months, people who followed Weight Watchers achieved significantly greater weight loss than those who tried to lose weight on their own.

Mean weight loss after three months in the Weight Watchers group was 3.9kg compared with 0.8kg in the self-help group.
