Well-nourished adults have no need for selenium

UK researchers analysed data from 12 trials with almost 20,000 participants, finding the supplements did not decrease the risk of cardiovascular events or all-cause mortality.

Selenium supplements were associated with a slight increase in risk of developing type 2 diabetes, alopecia and dermatitis.

Evidence to date suggested supplementation was “neither beneficial nor harmful” for CV disease but the increased risk of diabetes could not definitely be ruled out, the authors wrote.
