Western junk diet may shrivel the brain

JUNK food may shrink the brain, Australian research suggests.

Unhealthy Western diets have been associated for the first time with lower volume of the left hippocampus in humans, a finding which chimes with evidence from animal models.

Drawing on data from 255 people in their early 60s who had MRIs four years apart, researchers from Deakin and Melbourne universities show poor-quality diet is associated with lower hippocampal volume independent of ageing-related atrophy.

The researchers found people eating a diet high in fresh vegetables, salad, fruit and grilled fish had higher hippocampal volume
