From 2000 to 2009, the annual number of US hospital patients with any CDI discharge diagnoses more than doubled to 336,600, while primary CDI diagnoses more than tripled to 111,000.
Most (94%) cases were “associated with receivinghealthcare” – with 25% linkedto in-hospital transmission and the remainder attributed to nursing homes or attending doctor offices or clinics.
“C. difficile harms patients just about everywhere medical care is given,” the authors said, calling for improved hygiene and infection control as well as more prudent antibiotic prescribing.
