Which diet is best for gestational diabetes?

Dietary changes are the first choice for managing gestational diabetes (GDM), yet exactly how diet should be modified, with the aim of avoiding the need for insulin, is unclear.

Various studies have manipulated the amount of carbohydrates, or the glycaemic load to control GDM.

An Australian follow-up study in 58 women, published in May, showed women with GDM who followed a low glycaemic index (GI) diet did not have better postnatal outcomes in terms of glucose status or weight loss compared with those who followed a high fibre diet.
