Why a 'drug holiday' may decrease osteonecrosis risk

PATIENTS with osteoporosis taking bisphosphonates or denosumab may need a "drug holiday" prior to tooth extractions, a senior periodontist warns.

Recent evidence suggests medication-related osteonecrosis of the jaws (MRONJ) occurs more frequently than previously believed.

Dr Christopher Daly, chair of the dental therapeutics committee of the Australian Dental Association, says studies show the incidence of MRONJ may be around 1 in 1000 patients, and even higher in those who have been on antiresorptive drugs for four years or more.
