Why nurse-led care is best for insulin initiation

Primary care needs to adopt a practice nurse–based model of care that boosts insulin initiation rates for patients with type 2 diabetes and improves outcomes, Victorian researchers say.

The Stepping Up program, trialled in 266 patients from 74 primary care practices, resulted in 70% of eligible patients starting insulin compared with 22% with usual GP care, according to the findings published in the BMJ.

Insulin initiation also improved diabetes control, with 36% of patients achieving HbA1c target levels of under 7% at 12 months
