Why we may have underestimated HRT-breast cancer link
TAKING combined HRT over five years nearly triples the risk of breast cancer in postmenopausal women, a prospective study shows, leading researchers to posit that the relative risk has previously been underestimated.
Reassuringly, however, the increased risk of cancer associated with HRT disappears once therapy is discontinued.
Some 39,000 women were followed for six years in the Breast Cancer Now Generations study led by the Institute of Cancer Research, London.
Over this period, 775 women developed breast cancer, either invasive or in situ.
